Purpose of Company
Icelandair is the largest subsidiary of Icelandair Group. The purpose of company is to be a profitable international full service airline which offers its customers quality service. The company offers scheduled flights from Iceland to Europe and North America to more than 20 destinations. The company operates a fleet of 20 aircraft for its schedule, and for the Group’s charter and cargo operations.
History
Icelandair traces its airline roots to the year 1937, and has been operating international flights since 1945. We have used turboprop aircraft since 1957 and jet aircraft since 1967. As a result, we have accumulated a long and valuable experience in both domestic and international air transportation.
We have been a member of IATA (International Air Transport Association) since 1950, of AEA (Association of European Airlines) since 1957, and FSF (Flight Safety Foundation) since 1968. All of these international organizations are actively engaged in furthering air safety.
Icelandair as an airline is subject to the operations supervision of the Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration. The Republic of Iceland has been a member of ICAO International Civil Aviation Organization) since 1947, ECAC (European Civil Aviation Conference) since 1955 and JAA (Joint Aviation Authorities) since 1990. The appropriate rules and regulations on air safety matters, issued by these international Government organizations, are applied in Iceland, which, as a member State of the EEA (European Economic Area), applies in principle the same aviation regulations as the EU (European Union). Aircraft are maintained by Icelandair Technical Services at the maintenance facility at Keflavík Airport, Iceland, in full accordance with the procedures prescribed by the manufacturers and as authorized by the Icelandic CAA. The maintenance facility has been approved in accordance with the so-called JAR-145 rules for maintenance organizations.
Operation
Icelandair uses the location of Iceland in the North Atlantic between North America and Europe as the key to the company's network strategy and operation. By using the Keflavik International Airport as a hub, the company is successfully able to serve three market segments, i.e. customers travelling from Iceland, customers travelling to Iceland and customers crossing the Atlantic. By constantly tuning and adding to this network over two decades the company has multiplied the frequency of trips to and from Iceland – and thus formed the foundation of the Icelandic travel and tourism industry, and at the same time offered the 300.000 population of Iceland air travel services which are truly second to none. On the basis of its flight operations size, know-how and experience, Icelandair has expanded into providing charter and cargo flight operations to marketing companies within Icelandair Group, Loftleidir Icelandic and Icelandair Cargo.
Icelandair has a strong management team that have years of experience with the company and within the industry. Birkir Hólm Guðnason is the CEO of Icelandair, Helgi Már Björgvinsson is SVP Sales and Marketing, Andri Áss Grétarsson is SVP Finance and Resource Management, Guðmundur Pálsson is SVP Flight Operation. Hilmar Baldursson VP Flight Operations, Jens Bjarnason SVP Technical Services, Una Eyþórsdóttir is the VP Human Relations and Hjörtur Þorgilsson is VP Information Technology.
