Icelandair Groups Celebrates 70 Years

This year Icelandair Group celebrates 70 years of aviation history. Flugfélag Akureyrar was established in 1937 by a group of young aviation pioneer, but the leadership role in the establishment of the airline was in the hands of Agnar Kofoed-Hansen. This marks the begining of the history of flight operations by the firm that today is Icelandair Group. In March 1940 the company changed its name to Air Iceland and moved its headquarters to Reykjavik.

Then in 1944 another group of young aviation pioneers established Loftleidir Icelandic, which would then become the other main pillar of Icelandic aviation. The two airlines, Loftleidir Icelandic and Icelandair, then merged in 1973 to become Flugleidir. Following changes over the last few years the company has now merged as a dynamic Icelandic and international company – Icelandair Group. Icelandair Group is today a holding company with 10 independent subsidiaries in the aviation and travel services industry, which operate all over the world. The group has seen rapid growth and the outlook is for even more growth in the near future.

To celebrate the occasion Icelandair Group has created an interactive timeline with the highlights of its 70 year history.
