Hilton Announces First Hotel In Iceland

Hilton Hotel Corporation has today announced that it will enter into a Franchise Agreement with Icelandair Hotels, a fully owned subsidiary of Icelandair Group, for the 252 room 4-star Nordica Hotel in Reykjavik. The hotel is to be known as the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica, and will be Hilton Hotel Corporation’s first venture in Iceland.

The official signing ceremony took place on May 29, 2007 at the Hilton Dusseldorf Hotel, and was attended by Wolfgang Neumann, President of Hilton Hotels Europe, Magnea Þórey Hjálmarsdóttir, Managing Director for Icelandair Hotels and Jón Karl Ólafsson, CEO of Icelandair Group.

Welcoming the announcement, Wolfgang Neumann, President of Hilton Hotels Europe, said: “Our new partnership with Icelandair Hotels marks a significant step in our commitment to enhance and develop our accommodation offering across the Scandinavian region. It is only fitting that Hilton’s first entry into the Icelandic market is in partnership with the country’s leading tourism airline and hotel group, allowing us to further strengthen and expand our offering of leisure and business hotels across Europe.”

Magnea Þórey Hjálmarsdóttir, Managing Director for Icelandair Hotels commented: "This agreement will strengthen our operation, it brings international recognition and brand image second to none. Our hotel is a wonderful establishment, recently renovated and showing record bookings. It is a perfect match".

Jón Karl Ólafsson, CEO of Icelandair Group added: "We are committed to the profitable growth of our Icelandair Hotels operation, and this agreement with Hilton is a major step for us in that direction. The Hilton brand gives us access to valuable resources and customers which we intend to utilise to the fullest, for instance in the field of meetings and conferences".

Situated in the heart of Reykjavik, just a short walk from the city’s historic harbour, the recently renovated hotel is the largest in Iceland, and is considered the one of the flagship hotel properties within the region. The Hilton Reykjavik Nordica is expected to open its doors under the Hilton banner this Autumn.

Facilities include the highly regarded award-winning VOX Restaurant, Bistro and Bar, as well as the NordicaSpa and fitness complex. Meanwhile, for the conference and incentives market the hotel provides extensive facilities, not only offering Iceland’s largest conference space catering for up to 650 people, complimented by two private boardrooms and 11 meeting rooms supported by a separate conference centre and full business facilities with ample complimentary parking.

Iceland is increasingly become a fashionable getaway destination for European and North American travellers due to its strategic location between the two continents. Tourism is a major source of activity in the region and between 2000 and 2005 room nights grew from 27,000 to almost 100,000, indicating a huge growth potential in coming years.

In closing, Wolfgang Newmann added: “Iceland’s stunning natural beauty and wealth of natural outdoor pursuits combined with a vibrant and cosmopolitan nightlife makes the country a highly attractive year-round holiday destination. Foreign visitors have tripled in the past 15 years (over 360,000 in 2005) and we believe that this trend is set to continue.”
